The history of Verulamium city starts when the Roman tribes came and lived in surrounding areas of St Albans. However, the origin of Verulamium is said to be pre-Roman as Verulamium was populated with other tribes possibly from Anglo-Saxons. Verulamium was a Romano-British town, situated near River Ver. Also known as ‘Verlamion or Verlamio’ – Verulamium was considered to be the capital of Tasciovanus, governed by the king of the Catuvellauni (a small territory across River Ver) between 20 BC to 5 AD. Initially, the Roman city of Verulamium was a regular town with 40-50 soldiers with a small marketplace. Verulamium was invaded and repopulated several times throughout history which leads all the way to the 5th century when Verulamium became deserted.

Romans rebuilt and modified the city with new buildings. One amongst them was the Roman Theatre. It was built in around 14 A.D and is one of the oldest Roman-British Theatre in the English history. Verulamium Theatre was a prominent site of entertainment for the Royal Roman leaders, kings, and queens. Another reason behind its construction was to please gods as there were two holy statues; one standing behind and another opposite to the Verulamium theatre near River Ver. The Majority of the Romans treated the St Albans Verulamium theatre as temples to worship their chosen gods. There were also small shops created because most attendees were traders and so you know, trade and agriculture were reasons for bread. Verulamium Theatre was discovered in 1869 and excavated in the 1930s.
