Before becoming Regent Cinema, it was known as the Alpha Cinema opened on July 27th, 1908 in a small county located north of London in Hertfordshire. Initially, it had wooden benches in front, an adequate auditorium with 903 seats, restaurant, public baths, and a hairdressing salon on upper floors. It is one of the first and oldest on-record Cinemas in St Albans. After various historical ownership, today Regent Cinema is known as Odyssey St Albans.

Built in 7-weeks by Ezra Dunhams, Chequers Cinema was a fascinating cinema in St Albans. Chequers Cinema was opened on Saturday, January 20th, 1912, it was amongst the affordable and average-looking cinema with brick walls, paper carpets, and a single floor with one hall. However, it could accommodate 1,000 viewers with one screen. Sadly, the cinema faced financial instability during the 1960s and was permanently closed on Sunday, July 18th, 1965, ‘The 300 Spartans’ was the last movie it showed before disbandment.

Gaumont St Albans Cinema hit the cinematic locals with an astonishing opening in June 1922. At first, it was known as ‘The Grand Cinema Palace’ that could provide seating for 1,100 in the hall and 308 in the balcony. Unlike another closing history, Gaumont Cinema was very famous and commended by other Cinema chains like ODEON, but it was closed when other cinemas gained more population which resulted in a loss. Gaumont Cinema was permanently closed on October 27, 1973.

Odyssey Cinema is one of the best and only leading cinema in St Albans today. Odyssey Cinema replaced the Alpha Cinema in 1927 after when the Regent Cinema was scorched down in ashes. Fast Forward to its reopening, Odyssey St Albans again started showing movies in 2011 with major archaeological changes (seating arrangement 500, 1 screen).
