The aircraft museum along with the hall is indeed one of the oldest sites in the UK. It is situated relatively close to the ancient Roman Civilization city \u2018<\/span><b>Verulamium<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 and St Albans, the late Saxon foundation town. In fact, the site is partially connected to the first century BC settlement of <a href=\"\/cities\/wheathampstead\/\">Wheathampstead<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-238 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.a1taxis.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/salisbury-hall-1789.jpg\" alt=\"salisbury-hall-1789\" width=\"732\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.a1taxis.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/salisbury-hall-1789.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.a1taxis.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/salisbury-hall-1789-300x161.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 732px) 100vw, 732px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(<strong>Photo: <\/strong>Salisbury Hall in 1789)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"\/travel\/de-havilland-aircraft-museum\/\">De Havilland Aircraft Heritage centre<\/a> was once a manor of Shenleybury in the 9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century. History reflects <\/span><b>Asgar the Stallar <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as the owner of the mansion who was a high official to the Wessex King Egbert. The site of the museum had also witnessed several conquest and wars including the famous Norman conquest that resulted in the de Mandeville family, who looked after the place until <\/span><b>The Doomsday Book (1086) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was written. Three centuries later, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Montagu,_3rd_Earl_of_Salisbury\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sir John Montague (Earl of Salisbury)<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received the manor upon his marriage in 1380. From that time onwards, it received its name as \u2018<\/span><b>Salisbury Hall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019. Following is a short historical timeline of the museum:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-245\" src=\"https:\/\/www.a1taxis.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/imgexec-1972-1024x677.jpg\" alt=\"imgexec-1972\" width=\"758\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.a1taxis.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/imgexec-1972-1024x677.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.a1taxis.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/imgexec-1972-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.a1taxis.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/imgexec-1972-768x508.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.a1taxis.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/imgexec-1972.jpg 1032w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 758px) 100vw, 758px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>1507 \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sir John Cutte, who was the treasurer of King Henry VII and VIII, built a new \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 house<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>1668 \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this house was purchased by a London Banker name James Hoare<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>17<\/b><b>th<\/b><b> Century \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the nephew of Sir Jeremy Snow, John Snell received the hall<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>18<\/b><b>th<\/b><b> &amp; 19<\/b><b>th<\/b><b> Century \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the hall was in possession of farmers who were said to be \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 successors of John Snell<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>1905 \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lady Randolph Churchill (Mrs. Cornwallis West) occupied the hall as a residence. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Winston Churchill, her son, became a frequent visitor of the site.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>The 1930s \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sir Nigel Gresley of London and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Eastern_Railway_(United_Kingdom)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">North-Eastern Railway<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>1939 \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">de Havilland Aircraft Company used the hall for designing the Mosquito along \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 with two prototypes built in the adjacent buildings<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>1947 \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">de Havilland Aircraft Company left the Salisbury hall which left it in devastating \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 condition<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>1955 \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Walter Goldsmith, a former Royal Marine Major took over the hall and \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0surrounding site<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>1959 \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walter Goldsmith brought back the old Mosquito Prototypes and opened the site \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0for public<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>1981 \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Walter Goldsmith sold the ownership of the hall, and it remains private to date<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dehavillandmuseum.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">de Havilland Aircraft Museum<\/a> is widely recognised as the British\u2019s first aviation collection museum.
